Homework: Reflect on Readings
Background
As part of this course, you will be given assigned readings. These readings will focus on design, AI, and ethics. Please take the time to reflect on each week’s readings to fully understand the material and be fully prepared for the following week’s course.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this activity, you will better grasp the readings assigned for this week. You will have summarized the main concepts and ideas in the papers using your own words. This will enable you to work with the materials more effectively as the course progresses.
Instructions
- Create an entry for each question below in your notebook, with an answer in your own words.
- Questions for Alfrink et al. (2024)
- Explain the concept of the “Agonistic Arena” as a generative metaphor for public AI. How does this metaphor influence the design and implementation of public AI systems, particularly contestability and citizen engagement?
- Discuss the roles and efficacy of the various contestability mechanisms (like Interactive Controls, Intervention Requests, and Pro-Social Behavior Incentives) identified in the paper. How do these mechanisms contribute to the contestability of public AI systems?
- The paper contrasts two competing metaphors in AI design: the Black Box and the Sovereign. Compare and contrast these metaphors with the Agonistic Arena. How do they frame the challenges and solutions differently in public AI system design?
- Questions for Capel & Brereton (2023)
- Discuss the concept of ‘human-centered AI’ presented by Capel and Brereton. How does this concept differ from traditional AI approaches, and what are the key characteristics that define human-centered AI?
- Examine the four major research areas identified in the paper: Explainable and Interpretable AI, Human-Centered Design Methods, Human-AI Teaming, and Ethical AI. Provide examples from the text for each area and discuss how they contribute to the development of human-centered AI.
- Analyze the challenges and opportunities presented in the paper regarding the design and implementation of human-centered AI. How do the authors suggest overcoming these challenges, and what future directions do they propose for the field?
Product
The assigned readings should be summarized in your own words and captured in your notebook as a collection of notes, each containing the summary of one idea.
Follow-up
Your notes will be used in next week’s session.
